Some of you may have noticed that Cushnie Church has lost some of its harling from the South Gable. This happened during a week of gales in the winter. I can now report that the harling will be replaced in the Spring of 2016. The contractor will use lime mortar which will allow the wall to breathe and help prevent any further problems with this area in the future. Lime mortar is the traditional mortar and was always used before the advent of portland cement. As I mentioned, lime mortar breathes and so any moisture coming through the walls from below is allowed to escape. Cement simply seals in the damp and is not suitable for old stone buildings. Please be patient with any disruption to the access to the front door during the work.
