The Cushnie Handbell Ringers

The Cushnie Handbell Ringers was formed in 1995 to extend the musical options in church, include people not usually involved in music and to outreach into the community.

History

Handbell ringing has a long history of church music, worldwide, even before the advent of tuned handbells.

In 1995 the church purchased a 12 note set of Belle Plates to gauge interest. Mrs Mary Penny set up the original group and remains the musical director. From a core group of 6 members we built up to 17 members from our church and community. At one time we even had a small group of primary school children.

We now own our own 3 octave-diatonic set of bells and have a current membership of 9 from Cushnie church, other churches and communities.

Events

The group plays at special Church Services, concerts and events as well as care homes, WRI, Senior Citizens and Guilds. We participate in regional rallies and have hosted two of these in 1997 and 2009 in Aboyne where 70 ringers from all over Scotland participated.

We are members of the Scottish Region of Handbell Ringers of Great Britain.

Who Can Join?

We welcome any age from 9 to 90+ years to our friendly and informal group meeting at Cushnie church on Monday evening from 6 - 7pm. Ability to read music is not essential.
